Ab Shiderly does his part and more to spruce up
Spruce When 83-year-old Albert Shiderly walks his dog around
his Spruce Avenue home, he keeps an eye out for over-grown grass and bushes at
abandoned houses in his Sharon neighborhood. He said he mostly just cuts the front lawns and the strip between the sidewalk and the street And when he and his Samoyed Suky go for treks, sometimes with his daughter Heidi who lives in Meadville, he carries clippers with him and trims trees and shrubbery if it needs it. In addition to keeping things looking nice, Shiderly said he mows the lawns at these empty buildings to discourage crime and animals. Shiderty said he's been cutting the grass at vacant properties “for years" and has done so at a number of places — including a nearby former| church — in the area around Musser Elementary School. He said there are more places that need it than he's got time or energy to get to. Shiderly's lived in his home with his wife Mary Anne since 1961 and over the decades "most of the neighborhood has changed." Though he hasn't seen anyone else out doing the same thing, Shiderly said he's "had a couple experiences that make me know there's somebody else that cares, too." He mentioned mowing part of the yards at a home on Prindle and a home on Baldwin only to return the next day to find someone finished the job. More than once he's found a house where the grass is so tall he had to cut it with a hand sickle first before taking the push mower to it. The other people who live in the area seem to appreciate what Shiderly does. He said once he stopped by to visit with a neighbor and they called another person over because they wanted to meet the "guy crazy enough" to be mowing everywhere. "The Shiderlys do a wonderful job of taking care of their property, and Mr. Shiderly, will snowplow sidewalks in the entire neighborhood," said neighbor Kim Curry. "But I had no idea he was cutting the grass at abandoned properties in the city. He is amazing, especially since he's in his 80s." Council President Mike Donato said they were "ecstatic” about what Shiderly had taken on himself and hoped that other citizens might be inspired by him. Donato said that if folks do mow the abandoned properties in their neighborhood, the city will provide gasoline for them. City Manager Tom Lavorini said to contact street department head John Cave about that. 'We're eternally grateful," said Lavorini of Shiderly's work.
